[Inglés]: The present PhD thesis addresses Rural Tourism, in particular Madeira Island?s Country Homes, focusing on the relation between this tourist segment and Madeira?s regional heritage. Generally, this investigation is a part of the empirical and theoretical debate over Rural Tourism?s sustainable growth and the recuperation and preservation of this region?s heritage.
In order to pursue our objectives we called upon a conjugation of qualitative and quantitative methods such as surveys, semi structured interviews, field work and bibliographical and documental research, due to the inexistence of studies of this nature about Madeira Island.
This investigation led to the conclusion that the symbiosis between Rural Tourism and the island?s heritage is positive, with the tourist growth of Country Homes in Madeira playing a vital role in the recuperation and preservation of the region?s heritage.
The results also show that the Country Homes? visitor?s profile differs when compared to those of other European tourist destinations and that this visitor is attracted to not only the natural heritage but also to the cultural heritage. It was equally stated that the Country Homes? touristy offer is ill suited to the touristy demand and that the elaboration of a «Best Practice Guide for the Country Homes» is imperative to ensure the quality and growth of this type of tourism.
Being the effects of Rural Tourism in the local economy still discreet, the results of the present investigation, specially the profiling of the visitor and the presentation of a Best Practice Guide, will be fundamental to a better promotion of Rural Tourism, of the region?s vast tourist resources and to the development of a fully integrated and articulated strategy between all intervenient towards the sustainable growth of Madeira?s Rural Tourism.

(Portugués): A presente tese de doutoramento aborda o Turismo em Espaço Rural (TER), em particular as Casas de Campo na ilha da Madeira, focalizando a interligação entre este segmento turístico e o património regional. De uma forma geral, esta investigação é parte do debate empírico e teórico sobre a relação entre o desenvolvimento sustentável do turismo em espaço rural e a recuperação e preservação do património desta região.
Para a prossecução dos nossos objetivos recorremos à conjugação dos métodos qualitativos e quantitativos face à inexistência de estudos desta natureza sobre a ilha da Madeira, através do lançamento de inquéritos por questionário, entrevistas semiestruturadas, trabalho de campo e pesquisa bibliográfica e documental.
A investigação permitiu concluir que a simbiose entre o Turismo em Espaço Rural e o Património da Ilha é positiva, tendo o desenvolvimento turístico das Casas de Campo na Madeira contribuído para a recuperação e preservação do património regional.
Os resultados mostraram ainda que o perfil do visitante das Casas de Campo na Madeira possui especificidades quando comparado com os perfis de outros destinos turísticos e que as motivações turísticas deste visitante não se fundamentam unicamente no património natural, possuindo o património cultural da Ilha uma relativa representatividade. Constatou-se igualmente que a oferta turística das Casas de Campo não se encontrava perfeitamente adequada à procura turística e que a elaboração de um Guia de Boas Práticas dirigido às Casas de Campo seria fundamental para a qualidade e desenvolvimento deste tipo de turismo.
Sendo os efeitos do turismo em espaço rural nas economias locais ainda discretos, os resultados da presente investigação, em especial o desenho do perfil do visitante e o guia de boas práticas apresentados, serão fundamentais para uma melhor promoção do turismo em espaço rural e dos recursos turísticos da Região Autónoma da Madeira e para o delineamento de uma estratégia futura integrada e articulada entre os diferentes intervenientes, em prol do desenvolvimento turístico sustentável do turismo em espaço rural na Madeira.
